Little Ears

The kids were recently in the car with Cathy. While stopped at a stop light, Will became very concerned and whispered to Cathy, "Mommy, I see a bad word."

"What bad word do you see, honey?"

"I can't tell you, it's a bad word and I'll get in trouble." Five year old logic is irrefutable.

"That's OK, Will, I'm asking you to tell me. You won't get in trouble. What bad word do you see?"

Will looked around, and very quietly whispered "Gashole," pointing at the gas station on the corner where they were stopped and referring to the person filling his tank.

Struggling to keep her laughter in, Cathy responded "Willie, why do you think that's a bad word?"

Will explained that he'd recently been riding in the car with a certain grandparental-type who called another driver a "gashole," and that particular driver later had to explain to all the kids that word was not appropriate for use by or around children. It just goes to show you that you always have to be careful what you say around these little ears, because they pick up EVERYTHING!

When my niece was a tot, her parents were very open about words for body parts and products. In particular, they promoted the S word for one particular product and the P word for another particular body part, that part normally associated with boys.

We took her with us to visit her grandma in Chicago, a prim Catholic and old-school teacher who didn't even say dang.

All the way up from Florida, the niece would find ways to use her new found body part lingo, particularly the above euphemized word, the one that rhymes with wheenis.

During the visit, a good two hours of us sitting on the edge of our seat waiting for the kid to drop the p-bomb, she was as prim and cultured a five year old as you could ever want.

We all left and waved and said our goodbyes and got into the car and weren't even sunken all the way back into our seats when she let go with a phallilalia of titanic proportions and said repeated the p-word something like 46 times. While she was waving goddbye.
